Managing pain in chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients is challenging. Yet, Antioxidants with pregabalin combination therapy have shown benefits.
A recent study determined the efficacy of antioxidant and pregabalin combination therapy in reducing pain in patients with CP.
The patients received either pregabalin with antioxidants therapy (treatment group) or placebo (controls) for 8 weeks and were assessed for a shift in maximum pain intensity utilizing the visual analog scale (VAS) and Izbicki pain score. Total painful days, opioid and non-opioid requirements, improvement in quality of life, number of hospital admission, and overall patient satisfaction were also assessed.
90 patients with comparable Demographic profiles and baseline pain scores were included in the study. Patients in the treatment group showed a significant reduction in pain intensity, the non-opioid analgesic requirement in days, and the number of hospital admissions to the placebo group. More patients in the treatment group showed satisfaction with the treatment than in the placebo group.
Thus pregabalin and antioxidant combination therapy greatly reduce pain, non-opioid analgesics needs, and hospital admissions in patients with CP, along with improving the overall patient satisfaction.
